Cargo Bike Cage

One cage for any bottle.

Independent project · Summer 2024

SolidWorks · 5052 aluminum · CNC waterjet · Press brake

The finished aluminum cage on a bike frame, holding a Nalgene bottle with two straps.

Problem

Standard cages are sized for one bottle. I wanted a single cage that could carry a wide range of bottle shapes and gear.

Solution

I modeled a parametric flat pattern in SolidWorks with open, playful cutouts and a strap mechanism to hold different sizes. I chose 5052 aluminum to keep it light. The profile was cut on a WARDJet CNC waterjet, then bent to spec on a press brake, with every angle checked on a digital gauge.

Outcome

A lightweight, durable cage under 150 g with clean bends that mounts on standard frame bosses. It was my first full run through waterjet cutting, forming and finishing.
